Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) blood tests look for signs of cancer from a single draw, across several cancer types at once. Mito offers two of them, and they take different design approaches. What does each test actually do?
LucenceINSIGHT is a next-generation-sequencing MCED test. From one blood draw it detects circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) mutations and cancer-associated viral DNA, and a machine-learning model predicts the likely tissue or tumor of origin. The idea is signal to tissue of origin: find a cancer-associated signal, then point toward where to look. In a Lucence validation cohort, the test showed an overall sensitivity of 80.9% (233 of 288 cancer patients across multiple stages, retrospective) and a specificity of 99.0% (310 of 313 self-declared healthy donors), with tumor-localization accuracy of 87.7% overall (Lucence Health validation data). Those numbers are averages across a mixed group and do not apply evenly to every cancer or stage.
Galleri is an MCED test from GRAIL. Rather than reading tumor mutations gene by gene, it looks for a single shared cancer signal that can be present across many cancer types, detected from one blood draw, and it returns a predicted cancer signal origin to guide follow-up when a signal is found (Source: grail.com). The appeal is breadth: one signal type screened across a wide range of cancers in a single test.
How do their panels differ in philosophy?
This is the clearest difference. LucenceINSIGHT is built to be focused or personalized. Galleri is built to be broad.
LucenceINSIGHT comes in three panels through Mito:
- Core screens for signals associated with 6 cancers that together account for more than 50% of US cancer mortality: thyroid, breast, pancreatic, colorectal, lung, and liver (mortality coverage estimated from GLOBOCAN 2024).
- Me adds 1 to 3 more cancers chosen with your doctor from a curated list of 12, for 7 to 9 total, personalized to your family history and personal risk. Estimated mortality coverage is 53 to 76% depending on what you select.
- 12 is a comprehensive, gender-specific panel covering 12 cancers, roughly 78% of US cancer mortality (GLOBOCAN 2024, conservative upper-limit estimate).
Galleri takes the opposite tack. Breadth has real value because prediction is imperfect and many deadly cancers lack a standard screening path. Focus also has value, because risk, detectability, and the action you would take differ by cancer. There is no universally correct answer between the two.

How fast are results?
LucenceINSIGHT has a stated turnaround of about 18 working days from the lab (Lucence). Galleri returns results from a single blood draw as well, but we are not stating a specific turnaround here because it is not confirmed in our source materials. Who does each test suit?
Both tests are aimed at adults who want to widen their cancer screening beyond the handful of cancers covered by standard guidelines, but their age guidance differs. Lucence positions LucenceINSIGHT for adults 40 and older, or younger adults with elevated risk from family history, lifestyle, or other factors. GRAIL recommends Galleri for adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 or older. If you are in your 40s, LucenceINSIGHT is the one that fits the published guidance. Either way, MCED testing is an addition to guideline-recommended screening, not a replacement.
LucenceINSIGHT may fit if you want to keep your panel focused on the cancers most likely to matter for you, or personalize it with your doctor. The Me panel is built for exactly this: adding up to 3 cancers to the Core set based on your family history and personal risk. If you have a specific concern, a focused or personalized panel can feel more targeted than a broad screen.
Galleri may fit if you want the widest possible net in a single test and prefer not to choose which cancers to include, especially to reach cancers with no routine screening path. Some people value breadth precisely because it is hard to predict in advance where a cancer might arise.

What limitations do both share?
These matter as much as the differences, and they apply to every MCED test:
- They screen, they do not diagnose. A cancer-associated signal is a reason for your doctor to order confirmatory workup, not a diagnosis on its own.
- They add to guideline screening, they do not replace it. Keep up with mammograms, colonoscopy, lung CT, and other recommended screening. MCED is designed to close gaps, not to substitute for proven tools. More than half of US cancer deaths involve cancers not covered by recommended screening (derived from GLOBOCAN 2024 and USPSTF-recommended cancers), which is the gap these tests try to narrow.
- A negative result does not mean cancer-free. Sensitivity varies by cancer type and stage, and being included on a panel does not mean a cancer is equally detectable. Early-stage cancers shed less signal and are harder to catch than later-stage disease. About 52.8% of cancers are still diagnosed at a late stage (Zeng H et al., Lancet 2021), which is part of why early detection matters and also why no single test catches everything.
- They do not assess inherited risk. Neither is a substitute for genetic counseling or germline testing.
