What are Biomarkers?

Biomarkers, also known as biological markers, are measurable biological indicators that reflect underlying biological processes, functions, or pathologies. They can be molecules, genes, cellular processes, or physiological measurements that provide clues about a person's health status.

How Many Biomarkers Are There?

There are many types of biomarkers, including:

  • Structural Biomarkers: These assess the structure or anatomy of an organ or tissue using imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans to reveal structural abnormalities that may indicate disease.
  • Functional Biomarkers: These blood biomarkers evaluate the functioning of organs or systems. Examples include blood flow measurements for cardiovascular health and lung function tests for respiratory performance.
  • Biochemical Biomarkers: These markers measure the levels of specific molecules in the body, such as enzymes, hormones, or metabolites, where abnormal levels can signal potential health issues. Examples include cardiac biomarkers, cancer biomarkers, and inflammatory biomarkers.
  • Genetic Biomarkers: These markers analyze variations in DNA that may increase an individual’s susceptibility to specific diseases.

Why Do Biomarkers Matter?

Biomarkers play a pivotal role in understanding health and disease, offering a multitude of benefits:

Early Disease Detection
Biomarkers can help detect diseases at their earliest stages, even before symptoms arise. They allow for prompt intervention and treatment, potentially improving outcomes and prognosis. For example, early detection of high cholesterol levels can prevent heart disease through lifestyle changes or medications. Therefore, biomarkers can indicate longevity.

Improved Diagnosis
Biomarkers can help differentiate between diseases with similar symptoms, leading to more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatment plans.

Monitoring Disease Progression
Biomarkers can track the course of a disease and assess treatment effectiveness. Healthcare providers can adjust treatment strategies as needed by monitoring changes in biomarker levels.

Personalized Medicine
Biomarkers pave the way for personalized medicine, tailoring treatment plans to an individual's unique genetic makeup and biological profile. This approach holds immense promise for optimizing treatment efficacy and minimizing side effects.

Biomarkers in Action: From Diagnosis to Personalized Medicine

The significance of biomarkers extends into real-world applications. For instance, specific biomarkers are measured to inform oncologists about tumor behavior and potential responses to therapies in cancer treatment, which helps develop targeted treatment plans. In cardiovascular health, biomarkers can indicate the risk of heart disease even before symptoms arise, enabling preventative measures.

Integrating these examples highlights that understanding and applying biomarkers enhances our understanding of diseases, paving the way for practical interventions and improved patient outcomes. Thus, biomarkers are not just theoretical constructs but vital tools in clinical practice that bridge the gap between research and patient care.

How do I join?

To join, visit mitohealth.com, select from any of our flagship panels, and choose a location for your blood draw. Once you sign up, we will contact you to arrange your first test.

Is biomarker testing expensive?

At Mito Health, we offer flagship biomarker test packages for individuals and duo bundles for two, priced between $399 and $798. Each package includes a comprehensive lab test that covers over 100 biomarkers, personalized insights from our top doctors, one-on-one health coaching, and exclusive access to lab reports and advanced tests. Our services can be paid for using HSA/FSA.

How is biomarker testing done at Mito Health?

We assess your baseline through a biomarker blood test that analyzes over 100 biomarkers at one of more than 2,000 LabCorp locations or BioReference labs in New York, New Jersey, or Rhode Island. Our doctors utilize AI to uncover details that are often overlooked in routine tests, taking into account your lab results, family health history, lifestyle, and future goals. This enables us to provide personalized insights and recommendations regarding supplements, nutrition, exercise, and sleep.

What do I need to prepare before these tests?

We will provide you with all necessary instructions before your tests. Certain tests may require specific preparations, such as fasting for at least 8 hours before your blood draw. Not fasting could impact test results, including insulin levels, glucose readings, and triglyceride levels.

How long does biomarker testing take?

Depending on lab availability, you can schedule your test as soon as the next day or within a few days.

How and when will I get my test results?

Your results will be sent to you within a week of testing. They will be accessible on your health dashboard in a clear format.
