PTH Blood Test: What Your Result Means
Understand PTH results alongside calcium and vitamin D.

What is a PTH blood test?
A PTH blood test measures parathyroid hormone, a hormone made by small glands in your neck. Its result needs to be read alongside your blood calcium level. You may see the test called “intact PTH” on an order or report. MedlinePlus explains the PTH test.
What does PTH regulate?
PTH helps regulate calcium and phosphate balance. When blood calcium falls, PTH helps bring it back up by acting on bones and kidneys and supporting calcium absorption from food. NIDDK describes the calcium response, and UCSF explains PTH’s role in mineral balance.
Vitamin D is part of this system too. Low vitamin D can stimulate extra PTH production, so a vitamin D result adds useful context when PTH is raised. NIDDK explains the vitamin D relationship.
Why does calcium matter when reading PTH?
Calcium helps show whether the amount of PTH is an appropriate response. An isolated PTH number cannot establish the cause of an abnormal result. What is a normal PTH result?
Use the reference range and units printed on your own laboratory report. Ranges differ between laboratories and test methods, so a cutoff found online may not apply to your assay. What can different result patterns mean?
These patterns suggest possible explanations, not diagnoses. “Raised” and “low” refer to the reporting laboratory’s reference ranges.

A PTH value within its reference interval can still be inappropriately high when calcium is high, because PTH would normally fall in that situation. Likewise, normal calcium does not exclude a parathyroid disorder. NIDDK describes both qualifications.
What should I do with an abnormal result?
Discuss an abnormal PTH or calcium result with your clinician. Bring the laboratory report, including its reference ranges, calcium result, and any available vitamin D results.
