Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator
Put your waist measurement in context using your height. No lab results needed.
How this calculator works
Divide waist circumference by height in matching units. NICE recommends using waist-to-height ratio alongside BMI in adults with a BMI below 35, with a general aim of waist circumference less than half of height.
This measurement does not directly measure visceral fat or determine whether you need lab testing. It is not a diagnosis. Pregnancy, BMI of 35 or above and other clinical circumstances need different interpretation.

What can waist-to-height ratio tell you?
Waist-to-height ratio puts the size of your waist in proportion to your height. It adds information about central fat distribution alongside BMI, which relates weight to height. The measurement is most useful when you take it consistently and read it alongside other information about your health. [1]
What does “less than half your height” mean?
For adults with BMI below 35, NICE advises using waist-to-height ratio alongside BMI and aiming for a waist less than half your height. At a height of 170 cm, half is 85 cm. A waist of 80 cm gives a ratio of about 0.47. This is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. [1]
- The ratio has no unit once waist and height use matching units.
- The same waist circumference gives different ratios at different heights.
- A tape measurement does not report body-fat percentage.
How do you avoid changing the result just by moving the tape?
Measure midway between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips. Keep the tape level, breathe out naturally and avoid pulling it tight enough to compress your skin. Using your trouser size or switching to a different landmark can make two readings difficult to compare. [1]
- Use the same waist landmark each time.
- Stand naturally rather than pulling in your abdomen.
- Record the waist measurement and unit, not just the ratio.
Can this tell you how much visceral fat you have?
No. Waist size includes more than the fat around your abdominal organs. It cannot separate visceral fat, fat under the skin and other tissues. A change in waist size is therefore a change in an external measurement, not a direct measurement of how much visceral fat changed. [2]
What if your question is about fat loss or muscle gain?
A body composition assessment answers a different question from the tape measure. A DEXA body composition scan reports fat and lean mass, adding detail that weight, BMI and waist measurements do not provide. Blood glucose and lipid tests answer separate questions about your metabolic health. [3]
- Waist and height describe body dimensions.
- DEXA adds measurements of fat and lean mass.
- Blood tests add glucose and cholesterol information rather than estimating body composition.
Track what changes alongside your waist
Understand visceral fat and how it differs from waist size- A DEXA body composition scan measures fat and lean mass, adding detail about how your body composition changes with training or weight changes.
- HbA1c, fasting glucose and a lipid panel let you track blood sugar and cholesterol alongside your waist measurement, connecting body measurements with metabolic health.
- Use those results to set a baseline for your goals. With Mito membership, a clinician-reviewed action plan helps you decide which habits and markers to focus on next.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as waist-to-hip ratio?
No. Waist-to-height ratio divides waist circumference by height. Waist-to-hip ratio uses hip circumference instead. Their numbers and reference ranges are different.
Can I use inches instead of centimetres?
Yes. Select the correct unit for each field. The calculator converts the measurements into matching units before dividing, so the ratio has no unit.
Can this calculator measure visceral fat?
No. Waist-to-height ratio is an indirect assessment of central fat distribution. It cannot separate visceral fat from the other tissues contributing to your waist measurement or report visceral fat mass. [1]
Who is this adult calculator unsuitable for?
Do not use it during pregnancy or for children. The reference used here is for adults with BMI below 35. An eating disorder or a condition that affects height also makes this kind of self-assessment unsuitable. [2]
