How this budget calculator works
Enter a spending budget, choose your state and select the health goals you want to explore. The planner finds catalog tests associated with those goals so you can review and adjust your selection.
Review the available labs and complete price before adding tests to your cart. Test prices, collection fees and state availability can affect what fits. The checkout total is the amount to review before paying.
Your budget does not reserve funds or confirm reimbursement. Check your account balance, eligible expenses and any plan deadlines separately.
Make a testing plan before you spend
A useful testing budget starts with the question you want answered. Compare the measurements each test includes, look for overlap with recent results and leave room for costs shown at checkout. The planner helps you explore options; fitting a budget does not establish that a test is needed or that your benefits plan will reimburse it. [1]
Should you treat an HSA balance like an FSA deadline?
No. Unused HSA funds carry forward. A health FSA is generally use it or lose it, but the plan may offer a carryover or grace period. First identify which account you have and read its rules. An account balance alone does not tell you that you need to spend it now. [1]
How do you choose between tests that fit your budget?
Start with the measurements you want, check which health tests may qualify for HSA/FSA spending, then compare what each test or panel actually includes. A larger panel may overlap with tests you have already selected. For example, glucose is commonly included in a comprehensive metabolic panel, so check the component list before adding a separate glucose test. [4]
- Write down the health question before choosing a panel.
- Check recent reports for measurements you already have.
- Compare the final total and remove duplicate measurements before purchasing.
Which date matters when an FSA deadline is close?
The date you receive a health service and the deadline to submit a claim are different. A run-out period allows time to submit claims for eligible expenses already incurred; it does not by itself extend the time to receive care. Before booking near a deadline, confirm the applicable dates with your administrator. [3]
- Plan year: the coverage period that applies to your account.
- Grace period: extra time to incur eligible expenses, if your plan offers it.
- Claim deadline: the last date your plan accepts the required paperwork.
What should you check before paying or claiming reimbursement?
Eligibility depends on the expense and its medical purpose, not simply whether a card payment is accepted. IRS Publication 502 lists laboratory fees that are part of medical care, while expenses merely beneficial to general health follow different rules. Keep the itemized receipt and any documentation your plan requests. If your budget also includes vitamins or supplements, check their eligibility separately. [2]
- Confirm the specific expense with your plan when eligibility is unclear.
- Keep the service date, description and amount with your receipt.
- Do not claim the same expense from two reimbursement sources.
Put your budget toward questions you want answered
Read the guide to HSA/FSA-eligible health tests- Start with a question that matters to you, such as understanding blood sugar or exploring a family history of heart disease. Use the planner to compare tests around that goal.
- Take the health quiz to share symptoms, concerns, family history and goals, then explore a panel tailored to what you want to learn.
- With Mito membership, testing leads to clinician-reviewed insights and an action plan, so your budget supports both learning your numbers and deciding what to do next.

Frequently asked questions
Is this an HSA contribution or tax-savings calculator?
No. This planner compares lab testing options with the spending budget you enter. It does not calculate contribution limits, income-tax savings or how much you should contribute to an account.
Do I have to use my full budget?
No. Choose tests for a useful health question rather than to reach a spending target. HSA balances carry forward, and FSA carryover or grace-period options depend on your plan. [1]
Can I use this without an HSA or FSA?
Yes. You can use the tool to compare tests against a personal spending budget. The budget is an amount you choose; it is not a connection to a benefits account.
What should I save for reimbursement?
Keep the itemized receipt and any documentation your administrator requires. Check whether the expense has already been reimbursed elsewhere; the same expense cannot be reimbursed twice. [1]
