High magnesium in the blood often causes no symptoms when the elevation is mild. As blood levels rise, possible symptoms include nausea, flushing, weakness, low blood pressure, slowed reflexes, drowsiness, and changes in breathing or heart rhythm. The result needs to be interpreted using the test method, kidney function, symptoms, and recent medicines or supplements.

Symptoms Associated With High Magnesium
Possible symptoms include:
- nausea or vomiting;
- facial flushing or feeling unusually warm;
- weakness, drowsiness, or reduced reflexes;
- lightheadedness related to low blood pressure; or
- slow breathing or an abnormal heartbeat in severe cases.
Seek urgent assessment for difficulty breathing, fainting, marked confusion, severe weakness, or a new abnormal heartbeat. Symptoms matter even when the laboratory result is not available.
Why Context and Test Method Matter
Clinically significant high serum magnesium is uncommon in people whose kidneys clear magnesium normally. Kidney impairment and magnesium-containing medicines or supplements can increase risk. The amount consumed does not predict a blood result reliably without this context.
Serum magnesium and red-blood-cell magnesium are not interchangeable. Use the specimen type, method, units, and reference interval on the report. Mito’s magnesium RBC test measures red-blood-cell magnesium and should not be presented as a replacement for serum testing when acute magnesium excess is the concern.

Review an unexpected result with the ordering clinician. Bring the laboratory report and a list of prescription medicines, antacids, laxatives, and supplements. Do not stop a prescription medicine or try to lower magnesium without individualized guidance.
