You can get a lab VO2 max test near you at a partner testing center booked through an online service, at a fitness studio such as DexaFit, at a university or hospital sports-medicine lab, or at some gyms. Listed prices for a single test run from about $105 to $315. Through Mito, the test costs $178.20 for members and $249.48 without a membership, at partner centers nationwide. A smartwatch estimate costs nothing extra if you already own one, but it is an estimate, not a measurement.
To see where you can test, enter your ZIP code on the Mito VO2 Max Test page and check centers near you. It shows the nearest partner centers before you buy.
A VO2 max test measures the most oxygen your body can use during all-out exercise. You wear a mask that analyzes your breath while you run on a treadmill or ride a bike, with about 8 to 15 minutes of hard effort. Every option below sells this kind of test. What differs is the price, whether you need a membership, and what the report includes.

What a VO2 max test costs through Mito
Mito sells the VO2 Max Test for $178.20 for members and $249.48 for non-members. The price is the same at every partner center and includes booking, any physician’s order the center needs, and your report in the Mito dashboard. There is no separate center or order fee.
Membership is optional. It costs $9 a month, which you can cancel anytime, or $99 a year. If you only want one test, one month of membership brings the total to $187.20, which is less than the non-member price. Members also get a personalized action plan that takes the result into account, next to their lab results.
Your report shows your VO2 max compared with people of your age and sex, your aerobic and anaerobic thresholds with the heart rate at each, your measured max heart rate, your heart rate recovery and your METs. Reports usually arrive within 24 hours, and officially within 2 business days.
Before you pay, a one-minute safety check confirms the test suits you. If two or more items on it apply to you, you need a short clearance letter from your own doctor, and you find out before you pay. The test is for adults 18 and over and is not done during pregnancy.
Superpower: the test price plus a yearly membership
Superpower lists its VO2 Max Test at $249 and requires its membership, listed at $199 a year, so the first year costs $448 [1]. The membership also includes Superpower’s yearly blood testing, which changes the math if you would use it. Superpower’s page says pricing may vary for members in New York and New Jersey.
Its test returns seven results across VO2 max, peak METs and heart rate recovery. Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds and max heart rate are not listed among those results. Superpower offers the test in 41 states and DC [1].
Quest’s VO2 max test listing
Quest’s consumer site lists a VO2 max test “starting at $145” [2]. The price depends on the testing location, and the purchase happens on Quest’s testing partner’s website, not on Quest’s. Quest’s page lists VO2 max, max heart rate, aerobic and anaerobic VO2 and heart rate, and heart rate recovery, and says you must be 18 or older to buy.
DexaFit studios
DexaFit studios are independently owned, and each sets its own price. DexaFit’s national pricing page does not list prices; it sends you to your nearest studio [3]. Of the studios whose pages showed a VO2 max price on October 28, 2026, a single test cost between $135 and $179:
DexaFit studio | Listed VO2 max price |
|---|---|
Denver, CO; Kansas City, KS | $135 |
St. Louis and St. Peters, MO; Dallas, TX | $149 (Dallas lists a $99 first-visit price for new clients) |
Louisville, KY | $149.99 |
Minneapolis, MN; Wausau, WI | $150 |
Sacramento, CA | $165 |
Las Vegas, NV | $179 |
Several studios sell packs of three to twelve tests that lower the price per test. DexaFit describes its test as measuring VO2 max, anaerobic threshold and target heart rate zones, followed by a consultation to review your results [3].
University and sports-medicine labs
Many universities and hospital sports-medicine programs sell VO2 max testing to the public. These labs listed a price on their own websites on October 28, 2026:
Lab | Location | Listed price | Notes from the lab’s page |
|---|---|---|---|
Middle Tennessee State University, Kinesiology [4] | Murfreesboro, TN | $105 (community rate) | Lower rates for university staff and students |
University of Utah Health [5] | Salt Lake City, UT | $135 (community rate) | Open to anyone; $120 for university staff and alumni members |
UF Health Sports Performance Center [6] | Gainesville, FL | $150 ($200 with blood lactate) | A provider explains your results; repeat tests cost less |
Marquette University Human Performance Assessment Core [7] | Milwaukee, WI | $150 ($175 with lactate) | Open to the public; treadmill or bike |
UC Davis Sports Medicine [8] | Sacramento and Davis, CA | $175 first test, $150 after that | Includes ventilatory thresholds, training zones and a training consultation |
HSS Sports Performance Center [9] | New York, NY | $315 (VO2 max only) | Includes training zones from your thresholds |
Several of these labs list prices below the Mito member price. They are in fewer places, though, and booking can mean emailing the lab and fitting its schedule.
Gyms and performance studios
Some gyms and coaching studios have their own metabolic cart. Examples with a listed price on October 28, 2026:
- Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center, Newport News, VA: $150 for members, $200 for nonmembers, with personal heart rate zones [10].
- CTS Performance Lab, Colorado Springs, CO: $199, with thresholds, measured peak heart rate, training zones, a written report and a one-on-one consultation [11].
Some large gym chains offer VO2 max or metabolic testing to members but do not list a price on their websites, so they are not priced here.
Smartwatch estimates: the free baseline
Apple Watch, Garmin and similar watches estimate VO2 max from your heart rate and pace during outdoor walks, runs and hikes [12]. That estimate costs nothing extra, and it is useful for watching day-to-day trends. It is still an estimate. In a 2025 study of 30 adults, Apple Watch underestimated measured VO2 max by about 6 mL/kg/min on average, an average error of about 13% [13]. A watch also does not measure your thresholds or your real max heart rate, which is what lab-based training zones come from. Our guide to raising VO2 max covers what to do with the number.
How to choose where to get a VO2 max test
- If you want the nearest option, check what is within driving distance first. Enter your ZIP on the VO2 Max Test page, or browse Mito partner locations by state, such as California, Texas, Florida and New York.
- Compare the cost for the test alone, not the headline price. A required yearly membership can nearly double what one test costs.
- Check what the report includes. If you want training zones, make sure the test measures your thresholds and max heart rate, not only VO2 max.
- Plan to retest on the same type of machine. Treadmill and bike results differ, so repeat tests are most useful at the same kind of center. A change of more than about 5% between tests is real progress.
- If you want results next to your blood work, Mito puts the report in the same dashboard as your lab results, and members’ action plans take it into account.
Is a lab VO2 max test worth the cost?
It is most useful if you want a measured baseline, training zones built on your own thresholds, or a check on your watch’s estimate. Fitness is closely tied to long-term health: in a study of more than 120,000 adults who had treadmill tests, low fitness was associated with a risk of death comparable to smoking or diabetes [14]. That is an association, not proof that raising your number changes your risk, but it is one reason people track VO2 max over the years.
To prepare, avoid exercise for 24 hours before, come well fed but skip a heavy meal in the 2 hours before, and set aside 1 to 1.5 hours for the visit. A VO2 max test is a fitness test, not a cardiac stress test, so it cannot check your heart for disease.

Frequently asked questions
Does insurance cover a VO2 max test?
Rarely. A VO2 max test for fitness is elective, so plan to pay out of pocket. Every price on this page is a cash price.
Can I pay for a VO2 max test with my HSA or FSA?
Through Mito, yes. You can pay with your HSA or FSA card at checkout. Superpower lists its membership as HSA/FSA eligible but does not say so for the test itself, and some DexaFit studios mark the test as HSA/FSA eligible. Your plan administrator decides what paperwork it needs, so keep your itemized receipt.
Do I need a doctor's referral for a VO2 max test?
Usually not. Through Mito you order online and any physician's order the center needs is arranged for you. If two or more items on the one-minute safety check apply to you, you need a short clearance letter from your own doctor first, and you find out before you pay. Superpower uses a similar screen.
Can I test my VO2 max at home?
Not directly. Smartwatches and fitness apps estimate VO2 max from heart rate and pace. Measuring it takes a mask that analyzes your breath during an all-out effort, which needs a lab, clinic or testing center.
Is a VO2 max test the same as a cardiac stress test?
No. A VO2 max test measures fitness. It is not a cardiac stress test and cannot diagnose or rule out heart disease. If you get chest pain, fainting or unusual breathlessness when you exert yourself, see your doctor rather than booking a fitness test.
How often should I pay for a VO2 max test?
Once to get a baseline, then after 8 to 12 weeks of training to see progress, or once a year to track your fitness. A change of more than about 5% between tests is real progress. Retest on the same type of machine, because treadmill and bike results differ.
