What this test is for
Rubella (German measles) is usually a mild illness, but infection during pregnancy can cause congenital rubella syndrome, with risks of fetal loss, deafness, heart defects, and intellectual disability. This test measures IgG antibodies to rubella, which reflect immunity from past infection or vaccination; a level at or above the standard 10 IU/mL cutoff indicates immune status. A positive result means you are protected, while a negative or borderline result flags the need for an MMR vaccination, ideally before conception rather than during pregnancy.
