Is Lp(a) already included in a standard lipid panel?
No. A standard lipid panel reports conventional cholesterol and triglyceride measures but does not include Lp(a). Lp(a) is a separate test that adds largely inherited cardiovascular-risk information.
Is one Lp(a) test usually enough, or should I plan to repeat it?
One adult baseline is often informative because Lp(a) is largely genetically determined. Repeat testing may still be useful in selected clinical situations or when confirming a prior result. There is no universal repeat schedule for everyone.
Can I compare this result with an earlier Lp(a) result reported in different units?
Do not directly compare or convert results reported in mg/dL and nmol/L. There is no single valid conversion between the two unit systems because Lp(a) particle size varies. For trend tracking, compare results reported in the same unit and keep the performing laboratory and assay context when possible.

Lipoprotein(a), abbreviated Lp(a), is an LDL-like lipoprotein particle that carries an additional apolipoprotein(a) component. Its concentration is largely determined by genetics and tends to remain relatively stable over time. Higher Lp(a) raises the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and calcific aortic valve disease independently of standard cholesterol measures.
This product measures one Lp(a) concentration from a venous blood sample. Depending on the performing laboratory and assay, the result is reported as particle concentration in nmol/L or mass concentration in mg/dL. These units represent different measurement concepts and cannot be converted precisely with one universal factor.
The product does not include LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein B, an advanced lipid panel, genetic testing, imaging, or a cardiovascular diagnosis. A low Lp(a) result does not rule out other cardiovascular risk, and a high result does not mean that a cardiovascular event is inevitable.

How to understand your Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) Blood Test result
Use the provider category and unit printed on the final laboratory report. Provider categories and the guideline's risk-enhancing thresholds are not universal treatment goals. One adult measurement is generally sufficient, but repeat testing may be useful near a decision threshold, after a relevant context or assay change, or under clinician direction. Lp(a) may be reported in nmol/L or mg/dL. These units represent different measurement concepts and cannot be converted precisely with one fixed factor. Keep results from different unit systems separate.
Lower Lp(a)-attributable risk
A lower result means less cardiovascular risk attributable specifically to Lp(a). It does not rule out high LDL cholesterol, high ApoB, hypertension, diabetes, smoking-related risk, family history, inflammation, existing plaque, or other causes of cardiovascular disease.
Higher inherited-risk context
A higher result adds inherited risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and calcific aortic valve disease. Risk rises continuously as Lp(a) rises. Interpret the result with personal and family history, LDL cholesterol, ApoB, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, kidney and thyroid context, and the rest of the cardiovascular profile. A high result does not make an event inevitable.
