Pre-test considerations
No fasting required. Sampling site and technique drive the result: skin and nail sites should be cleaned with 70% alcohol first, and the sample taken from the active lesion border or deeper nail material rather than surface debris, which carries contaminants. Tell the lab the specimen source and any relevant clinical history. Cultures are held for weeks before a final negative is issued, so this is not a same-week answer.

What this test is for
A fungal culture grows and identifies fungi from a sample taken from the site of suspected infection, such as skin, nails, hair, blood, sputum, body fluid, or tissue. It is the workhorse for diagnosing fungal infections, from superficial problems like ringworm and onychomycosis (nail infection) to serious systemic disease such as fungemia, fungal endocarditis, and disseminated mycosis in people at higher risk. The lab incubates the specimen for weeks because many fungi are slow growers, then names the organism if one is recovered, which directs treatment toward the right antifungal. A negative culture does not fully exclude infection, since recovery depends on sampling the right site and the organism's growth rate. Collection technique matters more here than in most tests: for nails and skin, sampling the active border or deeper nail material rather than surface debris is what separates a useful result from a contaminant.

Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost, covering the lab and what it takes to run the service. It is never a profit on the test itself. Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9 per month, and any applicable lab order or draw fee is itemized before you pay.
Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results appear in your Mito dashboard after the laboratory completes processing. A clinician then reviews them before your analysis and personalized action plan are finalized. Timing varies by test, and specialty assays and at-home kits may take longer.
