Is hs-CRP the right test for cardiovascular risk, or do I need standard CRP?
Choose hs-CRP when the goal is low-range cardiovascular-risk context. Standard CRP is generally used for more prominent or broader inflammation and is a different product. Neither test identifies the source of inflammation by itself.
Should I add hs-CRP if I already have a lipid panel?
It can add complementary context for selected cardiovascular-risk questions. A lipid panel describes cholesterol patterns, while hs-CRP is an inflammation-sensitive risk signal. hs-CRP does not replace lipid testing or a broader cardiovascular-risk assessment.
Is hs-CRP appropriate as a general wellness screening test?
Not as a universal standalone screen. It is most useful when there is a defined cardiovascular-risk question and the result will be interpreted with established risk factors. It cannot diagnose heart disease or locate inflammation.
Should I delay testing after an illness, injury, surgery, or inflammatory flare?
Usually yes when the goal is a stable cardiovascular baseline. Recent infection, injury, surgery, or an inflammatory flare can temporarily raise hs-CRP and obscure the intended signal. Follow clinician guidance if the test is being ordered for another reason or if timing is uncertain.

This test measures C-reactive protein at low concentrations using a high-sensitivity assay. CRP is an acute-phase protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation. The high-sensitivity method is used for cardiovascular-risk context because it can resolve lower concentrations than a standard CRP assay.
The product returns one hs-CRP result in mg/L from serum or plasma obtained through venous collection. It does not identify where inflammation is occurring, establish its cause, diagnose cardiovascular disease, or replace a standard lipid profile, blood pressure assessment, diabetes evaluation, smoking history, family history, or the clinician's overall risk assessment.
Current US guidance gives hs-CRP a narrow clinical role rather than treating it as a universal screening score. The 2026 ACC/AHA multisociety dyslipidemia guideline states that, in adults without ASCVD who have borderline 10-year risk by the PREVENT-ASCVD equations, an hs-CRP result of at least 2 mg/L on two successive occasions with no identifiable underlying cause can inform a clinician-managed lipid-lowering decision. That guideline threshold is not a laboratory reference interval and does not apply automatically to every buyer.

Use the cardiovascular category on the performing laboratory's report. Provider categories, the current guideline threshold of at least 2 mg/L for a narrowly defined clinical decision, and individualized treatment goals are different concepts. Cardiovascular interpretation is intended for clinically stable adults.
Lower cardiovascular-risk context
A lower hs-CRP result means less cardiovascular risk attributable to this inflammation-sensitive signal. It does not rule out high LDL cholesterol, high ApoB, high Lp(a), hypertension, diabetes, smoking-related risk, family history, or existing plaque.
Elevated cardiovascular-context result
An elevation can add risk information when you are clinically stable and the result is interpreted with your complete cardiovascular profile. One result does not show that inflammation is located in the arteries, identify its cause, or by itself determine treatment.
Possible acute or noncardiovascular elevation
Infection, injury, an inflammatory flare, surgery, or another tissue-injury event can raise hs-CRP. A very high or unexpected result should be evaluated for those causes before it is used as a cardiovascular-risk signal. A clinician may recommend repeat testing once you are stable.
