Zinc, Whole Blood
An essential trace mineral tied to immune function, wound healing, taste, and skin.
Consider this test if:
- Frequent infections, slow-healing wounds, hair loss, or a blunted sense of taste or smell
- A condition that impairs zinc absorption, such as cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, or liver disease
- Following a vegetarian or vegan diet and wanting to confirm zinc status
- Taking zinc supplements and checking whether you are over- or under-doing it
- Heavy alcohol use or restrictive eating affecting nutrient intake
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 2-4 days · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
A morning sample after an overnight fast is preferred, since zinc varies through the day and rises after meals. If you take zinc supplements, note the dose and timing, as recent intake raises the result; to assess your baseline, your clinician may advise pausing supplements beforehand. Collection uses a trace-element (royal blue-top) tube to avoid contamination.

What this test is for
Zinc is an essential trace element your body uses for immune function, wound healing, protein synthesis, taste and smell, and hundreds of enzyme reactions. This whole-blood measurement captures zinc inside red blood cells as well as the circulating fraction, giving a fuller account of body zinc than the plasma compartment alone. Low levels are linked to poor wound healing, hair loss, impaired immunity, altered taste, skin problems, and conditions such as alcoholic cirrhosis, cystic fibrosis, and chronic infection. High levels usually point to supplementation or industrial exposure, and excess zinc can quietly deplete copper.
The routine serum or plasma zinc test is the standard first check for zinc status and is more sensitive to recent intake; this whole-blood form reflects the cellular pool. Zinc, RBC isolates the red-cell content for a longer-term view, while Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZPP) is an iron-status marker and ZnT8 antibody is a diabetes autoimmunity test, not measures of zinc nutrition.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost, covering the lab and what it takes to run the service. It is never a profit on the test itself. Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9 per month, and any applicable lab order or draw fee is itemized before you pay.
Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results appear in your Mito dashboard after the laboratory completes processing. A clinician then reviews them before your analysis and personalized action plan are finalized. Timing varies by test, and specialty assays and at-home kits may take longer.
Do I need a physician's order?
No. Mito provides the laboratory order when one is required, so you do not need to arrange a separate physician visit before purchasing.
