Zinc Transporter 8 (ZnT8) Antibody
An islet autoantibody that helps separate type 1 diabetes from type 2 and atypical forms.
Consider this test if:
- New diabetes that does not fit a typical type 2 picture (lean build, rapid progression, poor response to oral medications)
- A family history of type 1 diabetes or a known high-risk HLA genotype
- Distinguishing LADA or other atypical diabetes from type 2
- Clarifying diagnosis when another islet antibody (GAD65, IA-2, or IAA) is already positive
- HSA/FSA eligible

Pre-test considerations
No fasting required, and no special timing. This measures an autoantibody, so blood sugar, recent meals, and insulin or other diabetes medications do not affect the result.

What this test is for
Zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8) is a protein in the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, and antibodies against it are a marker of the autoimmune process behind type 1 diabetes. A positive ZnT8 antibody result points to autoimmune (type 1) diabetes rather than type 2, which matters because adults presenting with new diabetes are misclassified roughly 40% of the time, and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) is easy to mistake for type 2. It is also used to assess presymptomatic risk in people with a family history of type 1 diabetes or a high-risk HLA genotype. ZnT8 adds the most value alongside the other islet autoantibodies (GAD65, IA-2, and insulin autoantibodies); guidelines recommend testing all four, since staging early type 1 diabetes requires at least two positive antibodies. On its own a single antibody narrows the question rather than settling it.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
