What this test is for
White blood cell count measures the total number of leukocytes circulating in your blood, the cells that fight infection and drive inflammation. A high count (leukocytosis) commonly reflects bacterial or viral infection, inflammation, physical stress, or, less often, blood disorders such as leukemia. A low count (leukopenia) can follow viral illness, certain medications, chemotherapy, autoimmune conditions, or bone-marrow suppression, and matters because it leaves you more vulnerable to infection. The number is most informative alongside the differential (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), which shows which cell line is driving the change. It is a sensitive but nonspecific marker: it tells you something is happening, not exactly what.
