von Willebrand Factor Antigen (vWF)
Measures how much von Willebrand factor you have, the protein that lets platelets plug a wound.
Consider this test if:
- Easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, or bleeding gums with no clear cause
- Heavy menstrual periods or prolonged bleeding after dental work, surgery, or childbirth
- A family history of von Willebrand disease or an unexplained bleeding disorder
- Working up a suspected bleeding disorder alongside vWF activity and factor VIII
- Tracking known von Willebrand disease or an acquired vWF deficiency over time
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 1-3 days · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
Avoid warfarin for two weeks and heparin for two days before the draw, since both interfere with results, and the sample should not be drawn from an arm with a heparinized line. Levels rise temporarily with pregnancy, recent exercise, acute illness, inflammation, and stress, so timing matters when interpreting a single value. No fasting is required.

What this test is for
Von Willebrand factor is a clotting protein that lets platelets stick to injured blood vessel walls and stabilizes factor VIII. This test measures the total amount of the protein in your plasma, regardless of whether the individual molecules are working correctly. Low levels point toward von Willebrand disease, the most common inherited bleeding disorder, which shows up as easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, and prolonged bleeding after dental work, surgery, or childbirth. Levels can also be acquired low (from certain heart, autoimmune, or blood conditions) or run high during pregnancy, inflammation, or acute stress, since vWF is also an acute-phase protein. Antigen quantifies how much protein is present; pairing it with a vWF activity (ristocetin cofactor) test and factor VIII shows whether the protein is also functioning and helps classify the type of von Willebrand disease.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
