Vitamin E (Alpha tocopherol)
Your main circulating form of vitamin E, the fat-soluble antioxidant tied to nerve and muscle function.
Consider this test if:
- A diagnosed fat-malabsorption condition such as celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, or chronic cholestasis
- Unexplained numbness, poor coordination, muscle weakness, or balance problems
- Taking high-dose vitamin E and wanting to confirm you are not over-supplementing
- Following a very low-fat diet or recovering from bowel or pancreatic disease
- Setting a baseline for fat-soluble vitamin status
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 4-6 days · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
Fasting is generally recommended, since a recent fatty meal and your blood lipid levels both influence the result. If you take vitamin E supplements, note the dose and timing, as they raise the level; to assess your baseline, ask your clinician whether to pause supplementation beforehand. The sample is light-sensitive and handled in amber tubes at the lab.

What this test is for
Alpha-tocopherol is the most abundant and biologically active form of vitamin E in the blood, a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes and supports nerve and muscle function. Low levels are most often caused by fat malabsorption from celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, chronic cholestasis, pancreatic disease, or intestinal disorders, and prolonged deficiency can produce peripheral neuropathy, poor coordination, muscle weakness, and visual changes. High levels usually reflect heavy supplementation. Because vitamin E travels on lipoproteins, the result is best interpreted alongside your cholesterol and triglycerides, since high lipids can raise the number without meaning your tissue stores are adequate.
This test measures alpha-tocopherol alone, the right default for checking overall vitamin E status. The Comprehensive Profile versions add gamma (and beta) tocopherol for a fuller breakdown of dietary forms, and the Vitamin A and E panel pairs it with retinol when both fat-soluble vitamins are in question.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
