What this test is for
Vitamin B3 circulates as nicotinic acid (niacin) and nicotinamide, and this test measures both forms in serum or plasma. Nicotinamide is built into NAD and NADP, the coenzymes that hundreds of enzymes use to break down carbohydrates, fat, protein, and alcohol and to build fatty acids and cholesterol. Low levels point to deficiency, which can come from poor dietary intake, low tryptophan, malabsorption (Hartnup disease), carcinoid syndrome, or prolonged isoniazid use, and severe deficiency causes pellagra: dermatitis on sun-exposed skin, diarrhea, and neurologic symptoms such as apathy, fatigue, depression, and memory loss. The result reflects recent intake, so note any niacin or nicotinamide supplements, since nicotinic acid is also taken at higher doses as a cholesterol-lowering agent and will raise the measured level.

Where do I get tested?
