Pre-test considerations
No fasting is required. This assay uses EDTA plasma that must be frozen promptly, so collection follows specific handling steps at the draw site. If you are receiving bevacizumab (Avastin), tell the ordering clinician, since the drug interferes with VEGF detection and can lower the measured value.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a protein that stimulates the formation of new blood vessels and increases vascular permeability, with production rising when tissues sense low oxygen. Its main clinical use is in evaluating POEMS syndrome, a rare plasma-cell disorder with neuropathy, organomegaly, and skin changes, where elevated VEGF is highly specific and tracks disease activity, falling with treatment and rising with relapse. Elevated levels also appear in other angiogenesis-driven states and have been linked to prognosis in several cancers, so a high result is interpreted within the full clinical picture rather than read in isolation. A normal VEGF does not exclude POEMS, and bevacizumab (Avastin) in the blood interferes with the assay and can falsely lower the result.
