What this test is for
Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasite that causes trichomoniasis, one of the most common curable sexually transmitted infections. It frequently produces no symptoms, but when present it can cause vaginal itching, abnormal or frothy discharge, odor, painful urination, and genital irritation in women, and urethral discomfort or discharge in men. This test detects the parasite's genetic material (rRNA) directly using nucleic acid amplification, which is far more sensitive than older wet-mount microscopy and catches infections that visual methods miss. A positive result confirms active infection and is treated with a short course of antibiotics, with partner treatment recommended to prevent reinfection.
