What this test is for
Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic roundworm found in tropical and subtropical regions, acquired through skin contact with contaminated soil. This test measures IgG antibodies to the parasite in serum, which is far more sensitive than stool examination because larvae are shed in very low and intermittent numbers. A positive result indicates infection or prior exposure and is the main reason this test matters: latent infection can persist quietly for decades and then progress to life-threatening hyperinfection when the immune system is suppressed, such as before corticosteroids, chemotherapy, transplant, or biologic therapy. Cross-reactivity with other helminth infections can occur, so a positive result is interpreted alongside exposure history and symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, an itchy rash, wheezing, or unexplained eosinophilia.
