No fasting required and no special timing. Recent blood transfusion can affect results, so note any transfusion in the prior few months. A positive screen should be confirmed and characterized with hemoglobin electrophoresis.

What this test is for
The sickle cell screen uses a solubility test to detect the presence of sickling hemoglobins, primarily hemoglobin S, in the blood. Hemoglobin S distorts red blood cells into a sickle shape under low-oxygen conditions, which is why it matters before situations like surgery, high-altitude travel, or intense athletic exertion where oxygen drops. A positive result confirms sickling hemoglobin is present but does not distinguish sickle cell trait (one copy) from sickle cell disease (two copies), so a positive screen is followed by hemoglobin electrophoresis to define the exact diagnosis. It also will not identify which specific hemoglobin variant is involved.
