Pre-test considerations
No fasting required. If collecting urine, do not urinate for at least one hour before the sample, and collect the first portion of the stream rather than midstream. Avoid vaginal douches or intravaginal products before a swab. Testing too soon after exposure can miss an early infection, so timing matters if you have a specific recent contact in mind.

What this test is for
This panel uses nucleic acid amplification (TMA) to detect the genetic material of four sexually transmitted pathogens in a single sample: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Mycoplasma genitalium. These infections frequently produce no symptoms, but when they do they can cause discharge, burning with urination, pelvic or testicular pain, and bleeding between periods. Left untreated, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and Mycoplasma genitalium can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, epididymitis, and fertility problems, so detection matters even without symptoms. Because it directly identifies which pathogen is present, the panel lets a clinician target treatment with the right antibiotic rather than guessing. It covers a broader range than the common chlamydia-and-gonorrhea pairing by adding two organisms that are often missed.
