Potassium
The electrolyte that keeps your heartbeat and muscles working, and a key check on kidney and acid-base balance.
Consider this test if:
- On a diuretic, ACE inhibitor, or other medication that shifts potassium
- Monitoring kidney disease or being treated for acidosis or ketoacidosis
- Muscle weakness, cramps, palpitations, or an irregular heartbeat
- Investigating high blood pressure that could involve aldosterone excess
- Tracking electrolytes after vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy fluid loss
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 1 day · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
Fasting for about 12 hours before the draw is preferred. Potassium is highly sensitive to collection technique: avoid fist clenching and prolonged tourniquet use, since both can falsely raise the result. Note any diuretics, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDs, or potassium supplements you take, as these shift the level.

What this test is for
Potassium is the main electrolyte inside your cells, essential for nerve signaling, muscle contraction, and a steady heart rhythm. This test measures potassium in serum or plasma, the standard way to assess electrolyte balance, kidney function, and acid-base status. Low potassium (hypokalemia) is commonly linked to vomiting, diarrhea, diuretic use, alkalosis, and conditions of mineralocorticoid excess such as primary aldosteronism, and it can cause muscle weakness, cramps, and arrhythmias. High potassium (hyperkalemia) usually reflects reduced kidney excretion, acidosis, or certain medications including potassium-sparing diuretics and NSAIDs. This is the routine serum measure of potassium status; the separate Potassium, RBC test looks at intracellular stores, and the Electrolyte Panel and Basic Metabolic Panel bundle serum potassium with sodium, chloride, and other markers when a broader metabolic picture is needed.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
