Pre-test considerations
No fasting required, and timing does not materially affect the result. A recent viral illness or certain medications, including aspirin, heparin, and some antibiotics, can shift platelet numbers, so note anything relevant. Clumping in the collection tube can falsely lower an automated count, which the lab confirms on a peripheral smear when needed.

What this test is for
Platelets are the small blood cells that clump together to form clots and stop bleeding. A low count (thrombocytopenia) raises bleeding risk and shows up in conditions like immune thrombocytopenic purpura, drug reactions, liver disease, leukemia, and disseminated intravascular coagulation; a high count can reflect inflammation, iron deficiency, infection, or a bone-marrow disorder. Recognizable signs that prompt a platelet check include easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy periods, or pinpoint red skin spots called petechiae. It is also used to track recovery, for example the response to chemotherapy, steroids, or a platelet transfusion.
