Pre-test considerations
No fasting required, and timing is not tied to meals. The sample is whole blood collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) or ACD (yellow-top) tube; heparin tubes and frozen blood are not acceptable. When malaria is suspected, testing should be done promptly without waiting, since parasite levels and symptoms can change quickly.

This test detects Plasmodium DNA in blood using PCR, the molecular method that confirms malaria infection and identifies the species responsible, including P. falciparum, P. knowlesi, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. vivax. Species identification matters because it changes treatment: P. falciparum carries the highest risk of severe disease, while P. vivax and P. ovale form dormant liver stages that require additional therapy to prevent relapse. PCR is more sensitive than a single blood smear and can detect low-level or mixed infections that microscopy misses. It is used to confirm or clarify a diagnosis, typically in someone with fever after travel to a malaria-endemic region, rather than as a screen in people without exposure or symptoms.

Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?

When will I get my results?
