Pre-test considerations
Levels peak in the early morning and decline through the day, so collect at a consistent time, ideally morning, for comparable results. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is the principal inhibitor of fibrinolysis, the process that dissolves blood clots once they have done their job. Elevated PAI-1 tips the balance toward clot persistence and is associated with increased risk of arterial thrombosis, including unexplained premature myocardial infarction, and it tracks with insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
