Parietal cell antibodies target the stomach's parietal cells, which produce stomach acid and intrinsic factor, the protein required to absorb vitamin B12. Their presence points to autoimmune gastritis, the process behind most pernicious anemia, and they are found in roughly 80% of people with that condition. Testing is most useful when B12 is low or when fatigue, weakness, numbness or tingling, pale skin, or a sore tongue raise suspicion of B12 malabsorption rather than dietary shortfall. A positive result supports an autoimmune cause; it is interpreted alongside B12, a complete blood count, and sometimes intrinsic factor antibodies, which are more specific for pernicious anemia.

Where do I get tested?
