Pre-test considerations
No fasting required. Collect a fresh stool sample into the provided preservative vial and avoid contaminating it with urine or toilet water. Because parasites are shed intermittently, more than one sample on separate days improves detection. Tell your clinician about recent antibiotics, antidiarrheals, antacids, or barium studies, which can interfere with results, and note any recent travel.

This panel examines a stool sample under the microscope for parasites and their eggs (ova) and adds an immunoassay for Giardia antigen, the single most common protozoan parasite found in stool. Giardia duodenalis spreads through contaminated water, food, and travel, and infection can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, weight loss, malabsorption, and general weakness lasting weeks to months. Adding the antigen test improves detection, because Giardia is shed unevenly and can be missed on microscopy alone. Infections can be acute, chronic with recurrent symptoms, or entirely asymptomatic, so the result is read against your symptoms and exposure history.
