Pre-test considerations
No fasting required. Collect stool into the provided preservative vial (10% formalin or a fixative transport vial) and avoid contaminating the sample with urine or water. Because shedding is intermittent, your clinician may request samples from more than one day. Note recent antiparasitic or antibiotic use, which can affect detection.

What this test is for
Microsporidia are microscopic spore-forming parasites that infect the gut and can cause chronic, watery diarrhea, weight loss, and malabsorption. This test examines a stool sample under the microscope using a modified trichrome stain to identify the spores, which are too small to spot on a routine ova-and-parasite exam. It was first recognized as a cause of persistent diarrhea in people with HIV, and remains most relevant when the immune system is suppressed, though it also affects transplant recipients and travelers. Beyond the gut, microsporidia can cause keratoconjunctivitis, pneumonia, and infection of the biliary and pancreatic ducts. Because shedding is intermittent, more than one sample is sometimes needed to catch it.

Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?

When will I get my results?
