What this test is for
This panel checks how the liver is doing across three angles: cellular injury (ALT and AST), bile flow and duct or bone activity (alkaline phosphatase, GGT, and total bilirubin), and synthetic function (total protein, albumin, globulin, and the A/G ratio). Elevated ALT and AST point to liver-cell damage from fatty liver, alcohol, viral hepatitis, or medications, while a high GGT helps confirm the liver, rather than bone, is behind a raised alkaline phosphatase. Low albumin can reflect chronic liver disease, malnutrition, or inflammation, and an abnormal A/G ratio narrows down whether the issue is protein loss or excess immune-protein production. It is commonly ordered for fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, or to monitor the liver while on long-term medications or after flagged results.
