What this test is for
Lipase is a digestive enzyme made mainly by the pancreas to break down dietary fat. When the pancreas is inflamed or injured, lipase leaks into the blood and rises, which makes it the primary marker for acute pancreatitis, with elevations linked to abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and pain that radiates to the back. Lipase is more specific to the pancreas than amylase and stays elevated longer, so it is especially useful when symptoms have been present for a day or more. A normal lipase alongside a high amylase points away from the pancreas, toward causes such as salivary gland inflammation, bowel obstruction, or macroamylasemia. Marked elevations also accompany pancreatic duct obstruction and chronic pancreatitis flares.
