What this test is for
Iodine is the raw material your thyroid uses to produce T4 and T3, and most of what you consume is excreted in urine, which makes a urine measurement a good reflection of recent intake. Low iodine is linked to goiter, impaired thyroid hormone production, and developmental and cognitive problems when deficiency is severe, while excess iodine can trigger iodine-induced hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or autoimmune thyroiditis.
