What this test is for
This panel measures the three principal immunoglobulin classes in serum: IgG (the dominant long-term antibody), IgA (which guards mucosal surfaces in the gut and airways), and IgM (the first antibody produced in a new infection). Low levels point toward immunodeficiency or hypogammaglobulinemia and help explain a pattern of frequent, recurrent, or unusually severe infections. High levels reflect chronic inflammation, chronic infection, liver disease, or lymphoproliferative conditions such as multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and leukemia. Measuring all three together shows whether a deficiency or excess is broad or confined to one class, which narrows the next step. Selective IgA deficiency is common and matters for interpreting other IgA-based tests, including celiac antibody panels.
