Reflex testing
If the hepatitis C antibody is positive or the hepatitis B surface antigen is reactive, confirmatory follow-up testing (HCV RNA by PCR to confirm active infection, and HBsAg confirmation) runs automatically to distinguish current infection from a resolved or false-positive result. This is done at no additional cost.

This panel screens for the three viruses behind most viral hepatitis in the US: hepatitis A, B, and C. It checks HAV IgM antibody (current or recent HAV infection or recent vaccination), hepatitis B surface antigen (a current, infectious HBV infection), hepatitis B core IgM antibody (HBV infection within the past 4 to 6 months), and hepatitis C antibody (past or present HCV exposure). It is most useful when someone has symptoms that point to acute hepatitis, such as fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, pale stools, or jaundice, since those symptoms look alike across all three viruses and blood testing is what tells them apart. A positive HCV antibody with detectable HCV RNA indicates current infection, while a positive antibody with no detectable RNA points to a resolved infection or a false-positive screen.
