Hepatitis B Surface Antigen with Reflex Confirmation
Screens for the three most common causes of acute viral hepatitis when symptoms or exposure raise the question.
Consider this test if:
- New fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or jaundice
- A recent known or suspected exposure to hepatitis A, B, or C
- Sorting out the cause of unexplained abnormal liver enzymes
- Recent shared needles, unprotected sex, or travel to a high-prevalence area
- HSA/FSA eligible

Reflex testing
If the hepatitis B surface antigen or hepatitis C antibody screen falls outside the standard range, a confirmatory follow-up test runs automatically to verify the result and, for hepatitis C, confirm whether the infection is current. This is done at no additional cost.
Pre-test considerations
No fasting required, and timing during the day does not affect the result. If you have had a recent hepatitis A vaccination, note it, since hepatitis A IgM can reflect recent vaccination as well as infection.

What this test is for
This panel screens for acute or recent infection with hepatitis A, B, and C, the three viruses behind most viral hepatitis in the US. It checks hepatitis A IgM antibody, hepatitis B surface antigen (a marker of active, infectious HBV), hepatitis B core IgM antibody (a sign of recent HBV infection within the last 4 to 6 months), and hepatitis C antibody. These infections share symptoms including fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, pale stools, and jaundice, so this panel helps sort out which virus, if any, is responsible. A positive hepatitis C antibody does not by itself confirm current infection, which is why the reflex to HCV RNA matters: it distinguishes active infection from a resolved one or a false-positive screen. If your question is simply whether you carry chronic hepatitis B, the standalone hepatitis B surface antigen test is the narrower option; this panel is built for evaluating acute or recent infection across all three viruses.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
