Pre-test considerations
No fasting or fluid restriction needed. A recent blood transfusion can mask or distort the pattern, since donor hemoglobin mixes with your own, so note any transfusion in the prior few months. Iron deficiency can lower Hgb A2 and complicate a thalassemia readout, so iron status is often checked alongside.

What this test is for
Hemoglobin fractionation separates the different types of hemoglobin in red blood cells and reports each as a percentage of the total. It is the core test for diagnosing sickle cell disease and trait (Hgb S), beta thalassemia (raised Hgb A2 and sometimes Hgb F), and other inherited hemoglobin variants. Hgb A is the normal adult form; Hgb F is the fetal form that should be low in adults; an elevated Hgb A2 is the classic signature of beta thalassemia trait. It is commonly ordered to work up unexplained microcytic anemia that does not respond to iron, an abnormal newborn or carrier screen, or a positive family history before planning a pregnancy. Because these patterns are inherited and stable, a single clear result usually settles the question for life.

It is never a profit on the test itself. Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9 per month, and any applicable lab order or draw fee is itemized before you pay.
Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results appear in your Mito dashboard after the laboratory completes processing. A clinician then reviews them before your analysis and personalized action plan are finalized. Timing varies by test, and specialty assays and at-home kits may take longer.
