Hemoglobin
The oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, and the core number for spotting anemia.
Consider this test if:
- Fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, or pale skin with no clear explanation
- Heavy periods, a vegetarian or vegan diet, or known low iron
- Training hard and watching whether oxygen-carrying capacity is holding up
- Tracking recovery from anemia or response to iron, B12, or folate
- Checking a general blood health baseline alongside other routine markers
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results within 1 day · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
No fasting required, and timing during the day does not materially change the result. Heavy recent fluid intake or dehydration can shift the concentration slightly, so normal hydration is best. If you are being treated for anemia, note recent iron, B12, or folate supplementation, since it influences how the number is trending.

What this test is for
Hemoglobin is the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Low hemoglobin defines anemia and commonly shows up alongside fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, pale skin, dizziness, and poor exercise tolerance; the usual causes range from iron, B12, or folate deficiency to blood loss, chronic disease, or kidney problems. High hemoglobin points toward dehydration, smoking, low oxygen states, or polycythemia. This is the standard hemoglobin concentration measurement (g/dL) used to assess oxygen-carrying capacity, distinct from Hemoglobin A1c, which tracks average blood sugar, and from hemoglobin fractionation, which identifies variants like sickle and thalassemia traits. An abnormal result is the starting point for follow-up: iron studies, B12 and folate, or a reticulocyte count to find the cause.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
