No fasting required, and timing of day does not affect the result. A single value is hard to interpret in early pregnancy, so serial draws roughly 48 hours apart are often used to assess the trend. If a serum result is inconsistent with your clinical picture, a urine hCG can help clarify.

What this test is for
hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the placenta, detectable in blood within 7 to 10 days of conception and peaking between the 7th and 10th week of pregnancy. This quantitative serum test reports an exact number rather than a simple positive or negative, which makes it useful for confirming pregnancy early, dating it, and following the rise over serial draws when there is concern about an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. Outside of pregnancy, elevated hCG is linked to gestational trophoblastic disease (hydatidiform mole, choriocarcinoma) and certain germ-cell tumors, including testicular cancer.
This is the numeric blood test. If you only need a yes/no answer, the qualitative urine or serum pregnancy tests are simpler and cheaper; the quantitative version is the right choice when the actual concentration and its trend matter.
