Pre-test considerations
No fasting required, and timing of day does not matter. Because hCG in early pregnancy is interpreted by its trend, serial draws are most useful when spaced about 48 hours apart and run by the same lab for comparable numbers. Note any fertility treatments involving hCG injections, since they can raise the result independent of pregnancy.

What this test is for
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced by the placenta and rises rapidly in early pregnancy, detectable in blood about one week after conception. This quantitative test reports an exact number rather than a yes or no, which is what makes it useful for tracking change: in a healthy early pregnancy the level roughly doubles every 48 to 72 hours, while a slow rise, a plateau, or a falling level points toward ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. Unusually high first-trimester values can reflect a multiple pregnancy or, less commonly, a molar pregnancy. Outside of pregnancy, elevated hCG is occasionally produced by germ cell and trophoblastic tumors, so the marker is also used in those settings.

Where do I get tested?
