What this test is for
Gluten is the storage protein found in wheat and related grains, and it is an occasional trigger of IgE-mediated food allergy. This test measures IgE antibodies to gluten, the antibody class that drives immediate allergic reactions. A positive result means sensitization, not a confirmed allergy: a true allergy requires symptoms that track with exposure, so the result is read against your reaction history.
Note that IgE-mediated wheat allergy is distinct from celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which are not driven by IgE and are evaluated with different tests. The separate gluten IgG and IgG4 tests reflect exposure and immune memory rather than allergy.
