Pre-test considerations
Fast for 8 to 14 hours beforehand, drinking only water. Plan for roughly two hours at the lab, since blood and urine are collected at fasting, 1 hour, and 2 hours after the glucose drink. Do not eat, smoke, or exercise during the test, as all three distort the result. Recent illness, certain medications, and very low-carbohydrate dieting in the days before can also skew glucose handling.

A fasting result can look normal while the 2-hour value reveals that glucose clearance is already blunted, which is why this test catches dysfunction earlier than a fasting number alone. Urine glucose at each interval flags when blood levels exceed the kidney's reabsorption threshold.
This version reports fasting plus 1-hour and 2-hour glucose with urine. If your question is gestational diabetes specifically, the dedicated pregnancy GTT uses the standardized timing and load for that purpose; if you only want a static snapshot, fasting glucose or a fasting-and-2-hour postprandial test is simpler.
