Pre-test considerations
No fasting required. Testing during or right after a hemolytic episode can give a falsely normal G6PD result, because the most deficient older red cells have already been destroyed and the surviving young cells carry more enzyme; retesting weeks after an episode resolves is more reliable. A recent blood transfusion can also mask deficiency.

What this test is for
G6PD is an enzyme that protects red blood cells from oxidative damage, and a deficiency is the most common red-cell enzyme disorder worldwide, affecting more than 400 million people. This test measures G6PD activity per gram of hemoglobin and pairs it with a hemoglobin level, so it captures both the enzyme defect and its consequence on red-cell mass. Most people with G6PD deficiency are asymptomatic until an oxidative trigger sets off hemolysis: fava beans, certain infections, diabetic ketoacidosis, or drugs with high redox potential such as the antimalarial primaquine and some sulfa drugs. Episodes show up as sudden fatigue, pallor, dark urine, jaundice, or shortness of breath, and in newborns the deficiency contributes to jaundice. This is an X-linked condition, so it is far more common in men, and confirming it before starting a known trigger drug is the practical reason most people test.

Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
