Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD)

$18.88 Member price $26.44 Non-member
Excellent 4.8 out of 5

The most common enzyme deficiency worldwide, and a key check before certain drugs and foods can trigger hemolysis.

Consider this test if:

  • You have African, Mediterranean, or Asian ancestry, or a family history of G6PD deficiency
  • Episodes of jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, or anemia following infection, fava beans, or a new medication
  • About to start an antimalarial, certain sulfa drugs, or another oxidative medication
  • HSA/FSA eligible
  • Results delivered to your dashboard · Reviewed by a real clinician
  • Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations

No fasting required. Timing matters: if blood is drawn during or just after an acute hemolytic episode, enzyme activity can appear falsely normal because young red cells have higher G6PD activity, so retest after recovery if deficiency is still suspected.

What this test is for

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme that protects red blood cells from oxidative damage. This test measures G6PD enzyme activity in red blood cells; a low value indicates G6PD deficiency, an X-linked condition that affects males more than females and is most common in people of African, Mediterranean, or Asian descent. People with deficiency can have episodes of acute hemolytic anemia (jaundice, fatigue, dark urine, an enlarged spleen) triggered by infections, fava beans, and certain drugs such as some sulfonamides and antimalarials, so knowing your status guides what to avoid. Note that activity can read falsely normal if blood is drawn just after a hemolytic episode, because young reticulocytes carry higher G6PD activity; if deficiency is suspected, repeat the test once recovered. Molecular genetic testing is the better tool when a heterozygous female may have normal enzyme activity despite carrying the variant.

    How does pricing work?

Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.

    Where do I get tested?

Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.

    Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?

Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.

When will I get my results?

Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.

    Do I need a doctor’s order?

No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
