Pre-test considerations

This requires a complete 24-hour urine collection into a lab-supplied container, often with an acid preservative; collect every void over the full period and keep the sample cold. For several days before and during collection, avoid caffeine, nicotine, and foods like coffee, tea, chocolate, bananas, citrus, and vanilla, and minimize strenuous exercise and stress, all of which raise catecholamines. Review medications with your clinician, since decongestants, stimulants, certain antidepressants, and others can distort results.

What this test is for

This panel quantifies epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine along with vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), a major catecholamine metabolite, in a full 24-hour urine collection. Creatinine is measured alongside to confirm the collection was complete and properly timed. The main reason to run it is to evaluate for catecholamine-secreting tumors such as pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma, and in children neuroblastoma, which release excess adrenaline-type hormones into the bloodstream. Elevated results raise suspicion for these tumors and are interpreted against symptoms and imaging, since stress, exercise, certain foods, and several common medications can also push levels up. The 24-hour format captures intermittent surges that a single blood draw can miss, which matters because these tumors often secrete in bursts.

    Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.

    Where do I get tested?

    Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.

    Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?

    Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.

    When will I get my results?

    Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow.
