No fasting required. For cycling women, timing matters: FSH is usually drawn early in the cycle (around day 3) for fertility and ovarian-reserve evaluation, so note your cycle day. Hormonal contraceptives, hormone therapy, and recent fertility medications affect the result; note anything you are taking.

What this test is for
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is released by the pituitary gland to drive egg development in women and sperm production in men. Its level helps locate where a reproductive problem sits: high FSH points to the ovaries or testes failing to respond (primary gonadal failure, menopause, Klinefelter syndrome), while low FSH points to a pituitary or hypothalamic cause. In women it is used to evaluate irregular cycles, amenorrhea, and ovarian reserve, and it rises sharply after menopause; in men it helps work up low testosterone, infertility, and testicular dysfunction.
FSH is most informative read alongside LH and the relevant sex hormone (estradiol in women, testosterone in men), since the two gonadotropins move together and the pattern is what distinguishes the cause. If you want both gonadotropins, the combined FSH and LH panel covers them in one draw.
