Epstein-Barr Virus Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) Antibody (IgG)
Marks past EBV infection, the timing clue that separates old exposure from a recent one.
Consider this test if:
- Lingering fatigue, sore throat, or swollen glands and you want to know whether EBV is old or recent
- A positive EBV screen and you need to establish whether the infection is past or active
- Confirming prior EBV exposure as part of a broader workup
- Sorting recent mononucleosis from a long-resolved infection alongside VCA antibodies
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Results delivered to your dashboard · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
No fasting required, and timing during the day does not matter. Because EBNA IgG appears only months after infection, testing too early in an illness can read negative even with active EBV; interpret it against VCA IgM and IgG and your symptom timeline.

What this test is for
Epstein-Barr virus is the cause of infectious mononucleosis and is carried for life by most adults. EBNA IgG antibodies appear during convalescence, typically 3 to 4 months after the initial infection, and then stay detectable for life, so a positive result indicates a past, resolved EBV infection rather than a new one. This timing is what makes EBNA useful: a positive VCA IgM with no EBNA IgG points to a recent or active infection, while a positive EBNA IgG suggests the infection happened months or years ago. It is most informative read alongside VCA IgG and VCA IgM, which is why EBV is often ordered as a full antibody panel when the question is the stage of infection.
This single EBNA IgG test answers one specific question, whether you have been infected with EBV in the past. If you are trying to date a current illness or sort recent from old infection, the broader EBV antibody panel (EBNA plus VCA IgG and IgM) gives the full picture in one draw.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
