What this test is for
Double-stranded DNA antibodies are autoantibodies directed against the body's own genetic material, and they are among the most specific markers for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). They appear in roughly 80 to 90 percent of lupus cases and are far less common in healthy people, which is why a positive result carries weight, though it is not by itself sufficient to diagnose lupus. Levels correlate particularly well with lupus nephritis activity, so the test is also used to follow disease and gauge response to treatment. Lower-level positives can also show up in other rheumatic conditions and in chronic active hepatitis, infectious mononucleosis, and biliary cirrhosis, so the result is read against symptoms and other antibodies.
This is the focused dsDNA antibody test, typically ordered after a positive ANA to confirm and quantify lupus-associated antibodies. The broader ANA screen detects a wide range of antinuclear antibodies as a first-pass test, and the Autoimmune Panel adds complement levels alongside ANA; dsDNA is the more specific follow-up when lupus is the question.
