Diabetes Risk Index (DRI)
An NMR-based score that flags type 2 diabetes risk before glucose starts to climb.
Consider this test if:
- Family history of type 2 diabetes and you want an earlier read than A1c provides
- Prediabetes or normal glucose with high triglycerides, central weight gain, or insulin resistance
- Tracking whether diet, weight loss, or exercise are lowering your metabolic risk over time
- Building a metabolic baseline before symptoms or abnormal glucose appear
- A worsening lipid pattern despite a normal fasting glucose
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 2-3 days · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
Fasting for 10 to 12 hours is recommended for accurate results. Water is fine. Because the score reflects lipoprotein and amino acid patterns, recent heavy meals, alcohol, or a major change in diet or activity can shift it, so test under typical conditions if you want a representative baseline.

What this test is for
The Diabetes Risk Index is a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) score from 1 to 100 that estimates your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, independent of current glucose or A1c. It combines the Lipoprotein Insulin Resistance Index (LP-IR), built from lipoprotein subclass sizes and concentrations, with branched-chain amino acids (valine and leucine), both of which predict future diabetes. This matters because insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction often build for years while fasting glucose and A1c still read normal, so DRI can surface elevated risk earlier than standard glycemic testing. It is most useful for people with normal glucose or prediabetes, family history of diabetes, or metabolic concerns such as high triglycerides, central weight gain, or a worsening lipid pattern.
This standalone DRI reports the risk score alone. The Extended Lipid Panel with ApoB, GlycA, and DRI runs the same score alongside a full lipid profile, ApoB, and an inflammation marker, which is the better choice if you also want cardiovascular particle and inflammation data in one draw.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost, covering the lab and what it takes to run the service. It is never a profit on the test itself. Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9 per month, and any applicable lab order or draw fee is itemized before you pay.
Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results appear in your Mito dashboard after the laboratory completes processing. A clinician then reviews them before your analysis and personalized action plan are finalized. Timing varies by test, and specialty assays and at-home kits may take longer.
Do I need a physician's order?
No. Mito provides the laboratory order when one is required, so you do not need to arrange a separate physician visit before purchasing.
