Pre-test considerations
No fasting required. The blood draw must be collected and handled correctly for an accurate result, so timing matters more than diet. Recent surgery, trauma, infection, active inflammation, pregnancy, and older age all raise D-dimer and should be considered when reading an elevated value.

What this test is for
D-dimer is a fragment left behind when the body breaks down a fibrin clot, so its level rises whenever clotting and clot breakdown are active. Its main clinical use is exclusion: in someone with a low or moderate clinical suspicion of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), a result below the threshold makes a clot very unlikely and can avoid further imaging. An elevated result is far less specific, because levels also climb with infection, inflammation, recent surgery or trauma, cancer, pregnancy, and increasing age, so a high value points to further testing rather than a diagnosis. It is most informative when paired with a validated pretest probability assessment, and a clot present for more than a week can sometimes give a normal value.

Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
