What this test is for
Cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs) are sugar structures found on the proteins of many plant pollens, foods, and insect venoms. Because these structures are shared so widely, IgE antibodies against them can make a wide range of whole-allergen IgE tests come back positive even when you are not truly allergic to those foods, pollens, or insects. This test measures IgE to CCDs (using the bromelain marker MUXF3), the antibody class that drives immediate allergic reactions. A positive CCD result points to cross-reactivity rather than genuine sensitization, which helps interpret a confusing pattern of multiple positive allergy tests that don't line up with your actual reactions. It is most useful as a tiebreaker: when whole-allergen IgE is positive but the clinical history is unconvincing, CCD reactivity often explains the mismatch.
